Discover Māoritanga (Māori culture)
Arrive in Auckland and you’ll instantly notice our vibrant indigenous Māori culture. Home to iwi o Tāmaki Makaurau (tribes of Auckland), Māoritanga is alive and thriving, and can be seen, heard and felt wherever you are in the city - from our schools, parks and community, to our people, language and way of life. The Māori values of manaakitanga (respect for one another), whanaungatanga (a sense of connection) and wairua (a sense of spirit) still guide us today, so when you come to Auckland you’ll discover a certain warmth and aroha (affection) that permeates throughout our beautiful city. We welcome you with open arms.
What is a pepeha?
In the videos above, Tiffany and Brad each say a ‘pepeha’ at the end. This is a form of personal introduction and one of the ways Māori show respect for, and connection with, the people they’re talking to. Māori have a deep connection to the land and their tūpuna (ancestors) – the pepeha introduces the landscape the speaker is connected to (for example the mountain or river), as well as their geneology.
